Legal Aid

The Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino (LASSB) seeks a Family Law or Probate Attorney to provide legal advice and document preparation services to low-income individuals and families in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. This role focuses on client counseling, legal analysis, and preparation of court documents in family law and probate matters, often within a limited-scope or self-help framework.

Attorneys work closely with experienced paralegals and support staff to ensure clients understand their rights, options, and court procedures. This position offers meaningful, direct impact in a mission-driven organization committed to access to justice.

About LASSB

Founded in 1958, LASSB is a nonprofit legal services organization providing free civil legal assistance to low-income residents. With fewer than 45 staff members and a robust volunteer attorney program, LASSB serves more than 8,000 households annually, impacting over 20,000 individuals across a large, predominantly rural region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Legal Advice and Client Counseling
  • Provide legal advice on family law matters, including dissolution, custody and visitation, domestic violence restraining orders, parentage, and support
  • Advise clients on probate matters such as guardianships, conservatorships, and estate administration
  • Explain legal rights, procedures, and options in clear, accessible language
  • Analyze client circumstances and recommend appropriate legal strategies
  • Conduct legal research as needed
  • Document Preparation and Review
  • Draft and review pleadings, motions, declarations, orders, judgments, and related documents
  • Ensure documents comply with California law, Judicial Council forms, and local court rules
  • Review documents prepared by paralegals for legal accuracy and completeness
  • Prepare clients to file and serve documents independently when appropriate
  • Collaboration and Supervision
  • Work closely with paralegals and support staff on case coordination
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and quality control on delegated tasks
  • Participate in case consultations and team meetings
  • Client Education and Outreach
  • Educate clients on court processes and expectations
  • Prepare clients for self-representation when full representation is not provided
  • Participate in community legal education events as needed
  • Case Management and Compliance
  • Maintain accurate case records and documentation in the case management system
  • Meet productivity and quality standards
  • Track outcomes and required data for reporting purposes
  • Stay current on changes in relevant law and court procedures

Qualifications Required

  • Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California
  • Minimum one year of legal experience (recent graduates with relevant clinical or internship experience encouraged to apply)
  • Strong legal research, writing, and document-drafting skills
  • Ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and compassionately
  • Experience working collaboratively with paralegals or support staff
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Commitment to serving low-income and underserved communities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal research tools
  • Valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation for occasional travel
  • Ability to pass required background checks

Preferred

  • Experience in family law and/or probate
  • Prior work in legal aid, public interest law, or self-help settings
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Familiarity with California Judicial Council forms and LegalServer or similar systems
  • Training in trauma-informed or client-centered advocacy

Compensation and Benefits
Salary: $75,000 – $89,553 annually
